Google deals with over 300 EU news sites for content payment.

Google has signed deals with over 300 European Union news publications, and many more are in the works. In Germany, Hungary, France, Austria, the Netherlands, and Ireland, the tech giant signed partnerships with national, local, and specialized news sites for paying to publish/use their content online. This agreement has come following the European Union copyright directive adopted in 2019 by European countries. The new law gives publishers significant rights when extended previews are published online, allowing search engines like Google to link to and use news snippets. The Publishers can demand payment when their content is used online under copyright legislation.

In addition, the firm announced that it would begin rolling out a new platform to provide license deals to tens of thousands of other European publishers, starting in Germany and Hungary. According to Sulina Connal, Google’s news and publishing partnerships director, the tool’s licensing proposals based on uniform criteria adhere to the law and existing copyright guidance. It also includes the frequency of news websites displayed and the ad revenue generated on pages that also show previews of news content.

Google announced last year that it would pay news publishers for content other than links and short excerpts, as it does in countries such as Germany. Publishers will be able to sign a Google Extended News Preview (ENP) agreement for this content using this new tool. The ENP will include details on the offer, how to register, and how to provide feedback.
