Bharti Airtel (Airtel), the second-largest telecom provider in India, has delved into the content delivery network (CDN) market by introducing Edge CDN under its Edge Cloud Portfolio. A CDN is a network of servers placed throughout an area to distribute internet material more quickly. Many services, like Netflix, Facebook, and Amazon, use CDNs to provide and handle the majority of the traffic. The Edge CDN will lower latency, prices, and server burden, allowing OTT platforms to concentrate more on app performance. The telecom operator will roll out Edge CDN in collaboration with CDN enabler Qwilt. With a CDN built on edge servers, Airtel and Qwilt's solution speeds up content delivery by bringing the users' computers closer to the content. The telco will use the CDN to speed up the delivery of web and video content.

Airtel announced that its target areas would be OTT, edtech, gaming, and healthcare industries. Edge CDN covers 120 edge locations. "Airtel has three main strengths to offer a differentiated set of cloud products," said Ajay Chitkara, director and CEO of Airtel Business. "We have 12 large data centers and 120+ edge locations. We also have a network with extensive coverage that extends to most countries and regions worldwide. Finally, India's small, medium-sized, or large businesses benefit from our GTM strength.

According to Airtel, the total capacity of the data centers is 120 MW. The telco has also made investments in its data center sector of about INR 5,000 Cr. " To support 5G-enabled cloud products, the company has 120 edge data centers and 12 big data centers. This news emphasizes the momentum we are building as we realize our vision to construct the world's finest performing edge delivery network," Qwilt CEO Alon Maor stated.
